Osaka

Exploring Japan’s kitchen. Street food, social energy, and a more relaxed big-city base.

📅 When I stayed: November 2025

⏳ Duration: 7 nights

🛜 WiFi: Reliable in most modern apartments (100+ Mbps)

🛂 Visa: 90 day tourist visa for U.S. passport holders

🌎 Best for: Great base for day trips and friendly locals

Intro – Who This City Is For

Osaka feels different immediately. Tokyo feels precise. Clean. Almost intimidating in its scale. Osaka feels social. People are a bit more social. Laugh louder. There’s more movement in the streets. It feels like a place where you can settle in quickly.

I made a few friends through Meetup events and walking tours. My favorite was the Osaka Free Walking Tour. Walking tours are a great way to understand the local vibe and meet other travelers.

The locals have a reputation for being more outgoing than the rest of Japan — and honestly, I found that to be true. It feels more laid back. More livable. Less rigid. Also: they stand on the right side of the escalator here. Opposite of Tokyo. Small detail. But you’ll notice it. One of Osaka’s strengths is access. You’re perfectly positioned for day trips to Kyoto, Nara, Kobe, and beyond. It’s a strong base.

Who Will Love It

If you want:

  • A big city without Tokyo intensity
  • Incredible street food
  • Easy access to day trips
  • A more relaxed social atmosphere

Osaka works. It’s known as “Japan’s Kitchen”

You come for:

  • Takoyaki (fried octopus balls)
  • Okonomiyaki (savory pancake)
  • Late-night ramen
  • Stand bars tucked into side streets

I’ll be honest though, Tokyo still has the edge for fine dining and “wow” factor experiences. Osaka is more about comfort and flavor.

Who Should Avoid It

If you only have time for one major city in Japan, I’d still recommend Tokyo first. Osaka is great — but it doesn’t have that “wow, this is pristine Japan” feeling everywhere. There’s more grit. A little more trash. Fewer polished moments. Some travelers I met were surprised by that. For me, It just felt like a normal city. Nothing dramatic. But if you’re expecting perfection everywhere, adjust expectations.

A Personal Note

I ended up staying longer than expected because I picked up a freelance contract. Working from the hostel during the day, then walking out into Dotonbori at night was a fun rhythm. Every 30 minutes or so, I’d see the Mario kart tour groups drive by. Touristy and entertaining. After 9 nonstop days in Tokyo, Osaka felt like a nice reset.

Where I Stayed

Hostel Q- Affordable. Friendly staff. Good location. The beds weren’t luxury — but it had what you needed. The best part was the common area. I’d sit by the window working and watch people walk past on the street below.

  • Type: Hostel
  • Cost: ~$12 per night
  • WiFi: Fast
  • Noise: Low
  • Would I stay again? Yes

The Night I Didn’t Book Ahead

I made a mistake, I wanted to be ‘spontaneous’ and plan 3-4 days ahead. I accidentally didn’t book a weekend thinking, “Oh, it’s a big city, I’m sure I can find a place.”Apparently it was a holiday. I went to 12 different places. Every single one: “Full booking.”

At 1am, I ended up in a net café. And honestly? It was cool and quite the experience. You get a reclining chair (more comfortable than an airplane seat), unlimited soft drinks, coffee, and privacy. *It cost me about $24.

Apparently some people use them long-term if they’re unhoused. It wasn’t ideal, but it became a funny travel story of the trip.

Working Remotely in Osaka

  • WiFi speeds: Fast almost everywhere
  • Cafes: Endless third-wave coffee spots
  • Power outages: None
  • SIM / eSIM: Easy at airport or online

I found it productive. You can work 5–6 hours, then explore in the evening without pressure. It’s not overwhelming and you won’t have FOMO like Tokyo.

tapin dinner

After work treat, they take diners comfort seriously. I had this all to myself and they even put a curtain in between other diners. Introverts dream.

Transportation

From Kyoto

I took the express train from Kyoto. Easy and efficient. Cheaper than the Shinkasen.

Public Transport

Metro is simple to use. But honestly? I walked most places.

Walkability

Flat. Easy. Very manageable.

Things to Watch Out For

  • Fewer public trash bins than you’d expect
  • Can feel crowded in peak hours
  • Dotonbori gets packed at night

Cost of Living (Short-Term Stay)

I didn’t rent long-term here, but travel costs were reasonable:

  • Hostel: $12–$25 per night
  • Meals: $6–$15
  • Transport: Minimal if walking
  • Coffee: $3–$5

Very manageable.

If you are staying long term in Japan or traveling between countries, I personally use Genki for travel health insurance. Genki travel health insurance

Octopus and ballena

An amazing dining experience at a local stand bar. Everything was made on the spot.

Pros

  • Food culture
  • Friendly vibe
  • Great day-trip access
  • More relaxed than Tokyo

Cons

  • Can feel touristy
  • Not as visually polished as Tokyo
  • After 3–4 days, you’ll want side trips

FAQ

Is Osaka safe?

Yes. Extremely safe. Zero concerns during my stay.

Would I Come Back?

Probably not as a primary destination. I saw the main sights. Ate incredible food. Had great memories. The overnight internet café. The best stand-bar meal of my life. Slowing down after Tokyo. If I wanted to explore day trips or other areas of Kansi, I would probably stop over here for a night or 2 and continue on.
