Intro – Who This City Is For

Negril is for vacationing, relaxing and taking it easy. I was only here for 3 days and It was the first time I used chatGPT to plan out a rough guide. I would recommend it, but definitely double check things. I settled on Negril for 2 nights and Montego bay for 1 night.

Negril, is right on 7 mile beach, Negril. Amazing sunsets and ambiance. To be honest, this was a rougher trip. I wasn’t used to the aggressive hustling vs Mexico. I also broke my phone and had to purchase a new one, not all places would take cards, so that burned half a day. I will say having everything backed up was nice. I was back online and all my emails, messages and photos were updated. I only lost maybe 3 photos.

Who will love it: If you want to lay on the beach and don’t mind getting asked every 5 minutes if you burn weed. If you like rasta culture, reggae etc.

Who should avoid it: If you don’t like being hassled, don’t like the heat or need things fast paced.

One personal anecdote: You need thick skin here. Expect frequent offers for taxis, tours, and weed especially on 7 Mile Beach. People were trying to hustle you hard every 50ft. Taxis, weed, ‘let me show you around’ and then demand a tip. Service can feel slower and less hospitality-driven.

But at the same time, this is a pretty spectacular view. 50ft from my hostel bed.

Best Areas to Stay

Anywhere on the 7 mile beach was nice. The west end was also recommended, but that seems a bit too far from the action and you would need a taxi at night. In town is also an option, but if you are in Negril, it’s best to be on the beach.

Where I Stayed

In Negril - Drifters@One Mile Nice basic place, right on the beach. Has a bar and music some nights. I was the only guest in the room.

Main Areas & Streets

7 Mile Beach, Negril

Endless beach full of bars and restaurants. You can spend all day here bar hopping and enjoying the views. You will get asked if you want to buy weed every 100 ft. I am not joking.
Who it’s for: vacationers, partiers
Best spots: Drifters

Normal Manley Blvd - A1

Main road with some shops and restaurants along the sides. The main traffic circle into town is where the majority are.
Who it’s for: Catching taxis, getting some food off the resort they are staying.

Things to Do

Nature: The beach has many options, you can Snorkeling near rocky west end, water is warm and swimmable year-round or just relax and enjoy.

🍽 Food & Drink

Jamaican food was the highlight of the trip. Bold flavors, lots of spice, and surprisingly affordable.

Must-try dishes

Patties – Cheap, quick, and everywhere. Jamaican patty from Hammond’s Bakery:

Banana porridge. Very delicous. This porridge was sweet and velvety, perfect for breakfast.
Jerk Chicken or Pork – Smoky, spicy, cooked over pimento wood. Along the side of the road there are a number of BBQs, they are all really good.

This was Jerk Chicken, fried plantains and festival.

Jerk Pork- A taxi driver recommended this place in montego bay. I was not disappointed. The Pork Pit

Ackee & Saltfish – Jamaica’s national dish, usually served for breakfast.

🏄 Adventure:

Ricks Cafe for cliff jumping. It is a blast and well worth the taxi ride up.

I didn’t do any but heard Blue mountains from hostelmates.

Transportation

✈️ From the Airport: I flew frontier via gowildPass and used Route taxis to get to Negril. It was super cheap, but you have to wait for the taxis to fill up, which could take 15-25 minutes.

- Short ride in town: ~$1–3 USD
- Montego Bay airport → Negril (shared route combo): ~$10–15 USD total
- You wait until the car fills up (10–25 minutes sometimes)

🚶 Walkability: Not very walkable other than on the beach, taxis are plentiful and cheap.

⚠️ Things to Watch Out For: Lots of scams, everyone will ask if you want to buy weed. If anyone tries to “help” you or show you around, just say “Sorry, don’t have any money” and they will forget you.

Cost of Living (Estimate USD)

Negril CAN be affordable if you stick to hostels and eat/drink and use transport like a local.

Excellent Jamaican food from Caribbean and colonial influences.
Affordable local transport.
Easy to relax and do nothing

Cons

Walking ATM feeling got tiring
There was no working ATM inside Montego Bay airport when I arrived (July 2025), so I had to use a currency exchange counter.

FAQ

Is Negril Jamacia safe?

Yes, It was safe walking around as a solo traveler/tourist. I stuck to the beaches and shared taxis. You will need to watch out for people trying to scam you or trying to sell you things. ie. weed, coconut, food etc. Montego Bay feels sketchy walking around, but I had no issues. I went back to my hostel before dark.

Would I Come Back?

I probably wouldn’t return, It was perfect for a short stop. The food was really good and the views were nice. I just didn’t enjoy the constant hustling, at least in the touristry parts.

Who should strongly consider it. If your goal is pure beach time, reggae, and good food.

Who shouldn’t: If you want to get any work done, want to make meaningful connections with locals.
